Fuel Cell Unit Unveiled at Connecticut Bakery
The Pepperidge Farm plant in Bloomfield will unveil today a new 1.2-megawatt fuel cell power generator that will produce the bulk of the 260,000-square-foot bakery's power.
Manufactured by Danbury-based FuelCell Energy, Pepperidge Farm's generator represents the largest commercial fuel cell installation in the U.S., company officials said. Connecticut is home to one of the country's larger concentrations of companies that manufacture fuel cells, which use hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity, heat and water.
The Connecticut Clean Energy Fund, funded through a surcharge on electric customers' bills, paid for $3.5 million of the project, what the company has described as "a significant percentage of the project costs." Officials declined to release the total project cost.
